Macro algae are commonly used in marine aquarium sumps and refugium’s to export nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate.
Macro algae will take up these nutrients to fuel growth; as the algae grows you simply harvest excess amounts thereby removing the nutrients locked inside from the system for good.
Apart from nutrient export macro algae are often grown for aesthetic purposes also, their colour and movement seem fitting in a marine environment. Most types of algae should not be grown in the display tank but rather in a separate space such as a refugium, this ensures the rapid growth and invasive nature of some species cannot overwhelm the display area.
Dense macro algae will provide the perfect environment for zooplankton to flourish providing a natural, constant and healthy food source for corals, fish and other aquarium inhabitants.
