The sand sifting starfish or sand star makes a great addition to clean up crew in the marine aquarium, the sand stars spend most of their time sifting the sand in search of food, as detrivores they feed on the detritus, waste & uneaten food etc that collects in the sandbed. Because of their behaviour and feeding habits they should only be kept in aquariums with 6cm or more of sand so that the star is able to completely cover itself.
Sand stars are one of the easiest stars to keep in the long term due to the ease with which they feed and shelter. Although it's best practice to avoid putting them in an aquarium that has been running for less than six months as they may struggle under those conditions to find enough food.
