Randalls pistol shrimp is a beautifully colored and marked shrimp that generally lives in a commensal relationship with various types of goby. We have had success keeping this shrimp with many types of goby, to increase the success of pairing them up choose a goby from the indian ocean / southern pacific areas that reside in burrows. Amblyeleotris randalli as a goby rarely fails.
Watching a pistol shrimp excavate a burrow is fascinating, often ther goby will appear to watch for danger whilst the shrimp improves upon the burrow. Often they will close the entrance to the burrow at night and open it again in the day time.
Sandy substrate with larger rubble or a few flat rocks or shells to provide some support create the best environment for pistol shrimp. Whilst they can be a bit disruptive to the bottom of the tank it isn't usually a problem if corals are kept mostly off the sand bed or the rocks supporting the corals are buried all the way down to the glass so the shrimp cannot get below them.
Randalls pistol shrimp is one of the smaller varieties and less disruptive. They will feed from the substrate without any specific feeding requirements beyond a healthy tank with other occupants.
