The long spine urchin are an interesting and useful part of the marine aquarium clean up crew, being voracious algae eaters they can make a significant impact on the control of unwanted hair algae. Provide lots of rocks for them to graze. Expect most of there grazing to take place at night or during periods of subdued lighting.
Long spine urchins are just as at home in a full blown reef tank as they are in a fish only with live rock system. They can feature in aggressive fish only tanks where other clean up crew would not survive as their intuitive use of their spines keeps them safe.
Urchins are mildly venomous and their spines are sharp so caution must be taken when handling or cleaning the tank.
