Yellow sea cucumber (Colochirus robustus)
Family: Cucumaariidae
Care level: Beginner
Temperament: Peaceful
Reef compatibility: Reef safe
Max size: Approx 7cm
Diet: Filter feeder
Yellow sea cucumbers offer a fascinating splash of colour, their bright yellow bodies stand out against rock work. This particular species stays small so is suitable for small or large reef aquariums. Best kept in aquariums that are well established as is generally the case with filter invertebrates. hen feeding they extend feathery feeding arms to capture micro organisms and particles from the water column.
Yellow sea cucumbers regularly reproduce in the home aquarium, it is possible for this to happen via spawning however more commonly it happens by one specimen dividing into two.
Like most sea cucumbers these cucumbers can release toxins when dead or stressed, there is some conflicting information on the level of toxicity and the risk of harm to other tank mates, under most conditions they should pose no threat to tank mates or humans, caution should be taken handling any toxins because like bee stings people react differently. In our experience of keeping these for many years we have had no issues with other tank mates or when handling.
